Glidewell Mini Dental Implants for Upper Denture

Suffering from you upper denture moving around or gagging you?  Then consider mini dental implants if you have lost some bone and can't have traditional size implants without grafting or adding bone.

IMG_3279My patient's upper ridge.  What looks like a wide ridge is mostly gum tissue.  Because of this thin ridge the use of mini dental implants here will be a good choice to consider.  Other options that would also work well are to expand the bone or do sinus lifts and place traditional size implants.  4 Traditional size implants would work to hold in a secure upper denture.

IMG_3285To secure my patients upper denture I placed 7 Glidewell Mini Dental Implants (3.0mm in diameter).  This will distribute the force adequately and allow for the denture to stay put while he eats and chews.  All without the roof of his mouth being covered.  His new denture will have a metal subframe to provide rigidity and snaps to fit over the o-ball.

The patients existing denture was retrofitted with space so that it could fit over the newly placed mini dental implants while I make him a new horseshoe shaped denture with snaps.

It was a magical moment to be in a room with so many talented Doctors who have devoted their lives to improving implant dentistry.  The offical press release is below.

Dr. Victor Sendax, Paresh B Patel, Jack Wimmer, Ronald Bulard

(New York City, New York, USA)

Old friends and new gathered at a private social club in Manhattan to celebrate the continuing legacy of Park Dental Research Corporation, a leader in dental implant research and products since 1967.

Hosted by Drs. Leonard Linkow, Jack Wimmer, Ronald A. Bulard and Victor Sendax on November 28th, the reception honored the life’s work of its founder Jack Wimmer and his pioneering colleagues.  The hosts further emphasized Park Dental’s ongoing, ambitious commitment to bring value-based implant solutions to dental patients around the globe.

Dr. Linkow eloquently delivered a moving tribute to Jack Wimmer, acknowledging Wimmer’s early loss of family while at a concentration camp, his study of dental medicine and subsequent move to the US with wife Sally Wimmer, and of Dr. Wimmer’s many contributions to dental implantology.  Based in New York City, New York, USA, Dr. Wimmer became a visionary in dental implantology.  He worked with a burgeoning community of innovative dentists to research, commercialize and distribute tooth replacement solutions around the world through Park Dental Research Corporation.   Dr. Linkow, who has written multiple textbooks and holds an endowed chair in implantology at the New York University (NYU) College of Dentistry, noted that he had traveled the world with his friend Dr. Jack Wimmer.  Dr. Linkow further described Dr. Jack Wimmer’s zest for life and his sense of humanity for the eager groups of dentists they met while lecturing internationally.

After Dr. Linkow’s stirring introduction, Dr. Wimmer spoke modestly of his career and boldly of a new era at Park Dental Research.  Dr. Wimmer revealed that he chose Dr. Bulard to succeed him at Park Dental over others for a reason:  Dr. Bulard understands the history of dental implants and has a realistic vision of how to build upon Park Dental’s experience to achieve new heights.

In accepting Dr. Wimmer’s challenge, Dr. Bulard described the honor he felt to continue the legacy at Park Dental.  He noted that the new management team quickly developed affection for Jack and is committed to ensuring Park Dental’s success.  Dr. Bulard then discussed the Dr. Isaiah Lew Memorial Research Award and its latest recipient, Dr. Victor Sendax.

The Isaiah Lew Memorial Research Award is presented by the American Academy of Implant Dentistry (AAID) to an individual who has contributed significantly to research in implant dentistry.

An implant pioneer and a founding member of the AAID, Dr. Isaiah Lew was committed to the “where, why, and how of implant dentistry” and spent a lifetime conducting surgical and prosthetic clinical implant research.   The award is given every year to perpetuate Dr. Lew’s spirit and enthusiasm for implant dentistry.   Dr. Lew was a key collaborator with Park Dental, as reflected by the products bearing the Lew name including the LEW MDI implant line.

Dr. Bulard then formally recognized Dr. Victor Sendax for receiving the Isaiah Lew Memorial Research Award.   Dr. Bulard reminisced about meeting Dr. Sendax at their common office building on 30 Central Park South in New York City, and how their initial meeting and ongoing professional relationship changed the way Bulard viewed implantology.    Dr. Bulard then proudly invited his good friend Dr. Victor Sendax to the podium.

Dr. Sendax recalled his experiences with colleagues in implantology and with Park Dental Research, including his relationship with one of his mentors, Dr. Lew.  After expounding upon the past challenges and successes of mini dental implants, Dr. Sendax reiterated his long-felt belief that minimally invasive implantology could bring great gains in quality of life to patients missing teeth around the world.  He also recognized the ability of Park Dental’s new management team to continue bringing innovative dental implant technologies to market.

After the hosts concluded their speeches, guests continued to mingle and enjoy the diverse gathering, availing themselves of photo opportunities with the impressive group of dental implant pioneers assembled in the historic social club.

Mini Dental Implant or a Regular Size Implant?

Although I like mini dental implants for lots of reasons, I do find the need for a regular size lots of times.  In some cases a regular traditional size implant will work better.

This example might be one of them.  This patient had lost a Root Canal Molar with massive amounts of bone destruction.

Clinical view shows a WIDE ridge of bone.  However under the gum is just a thin shell of bone and then the sinus cavity (air).  This would be a great place to consider a regular size implant and a sinus lift instead of a mini dental implant.  The regular size implant will allow us to push the sinus lifting bone up and act as a scaffold for new bone growth.

The OCO Biomedical 6 x 6mm in place.  The sinus lift was done through the same opening made to insert the implant.  Bone was packed to lift up the sinus membrane and then the OCO implant was placed.

X – ray image showing the OCO Biomedical regular size implant and the lifted sinus membrane.  Additional bone can be seen as a 'half circle' around the tip of the implant.  The OCO implant will be allowed to heal for 4-6 months and then the final crown will be placed.

Healing Cap placed to cover the OCO implant.

From Mini Dental Implants to Regular Size Implants, discuss with your dentist options that exist to help you replace a missing tooth with a dental implant and a fixed crown.

Mini Dental Implants or Regular Implants to Replace Missing Teeth with Crowns

This is a question I get quite often.  I think the answer is both.  It just depends on the bone, the patient, what the final goals are (financial, aesthetic, function, additional procedures that may be necessary….etc…the list could go on and on).

My patient was missing one of her molars and the premolar in front of that.

On the lower jaw she was missing her very last molar.  Typically I would not want to replace that tooth with a dental implant but she felt like her chewing was suffering without it.

In this case I decided to replace the missing teeth with traditional size implants due to the soft bone that was found in the upper jaw.  The implants were placed and allowed to heal, undisturbed under the gum.  This also allowed her to accumulate her finances to finish the procedure with porcelain crowns.

Almost a year later, she was ready to finish up. A set of abutments (the part of the implant the comes up out of the gum in a regular or traditional implant) were screwed into the implant.  Impressions were taken and the lab made these two crowns for her upper two implants.

The same thing was done for the lower implant as well.  The last tooth on the left is the implant crown.  The crown on the right is on a natural tooth.

Before and After the implants and crowns were placed.

In conclusion, you should talk to your dentist to see what options are out there for you to replace your missing teeth.  Lots of times patients get misinformation or think that unskilled dentists place mini dental implants.  We offer both solutions and place the dental implant that makes the most logical choice.  Both styles (mini or regular) will work for a multitude of solutions.  Start your jouney today and replace your missing teeth with dental implants.

Broken Tooth replaced with a Mini Dental Implant and a Temporary Crown

I am convinced that teeth know what day of the week it is.  Why is it always 5pm on Friday that teeth in the front smile area seem to break?

I don't have a great answer but I do have some mini dental implants and some composite.

The patient was given the option of a Root Canal Post and Crown or an extraction and a mini dental implant and Crown.  She elected to have the tooth removed.

I selected for this case a mini dental implant that has a high degree of initial stability due to its aggressive thread pattern and ability to lock in the bone at the tip.  It is an OCO Biomedical 3.0mm mini dental implant.

OCO mini dental implant in place after the tooth root was removed preserving as much bone as possible.  The implant is a solid one piece design.

Temporary crown on the OCO mini dental implant.  I will let the implant heal and let the soft tissue (gums) and bone fill in.  That will take around 5-6 months.  After that time passes we will ask the lab to make her a new porcelain crown to fit over the mini dental implant.

Mini Dental Implants Can Replace a Broken Upper Tooth with a Fixed Porcelain Crown

What do you do when an upper tooth that has had a root canal just breaks one day?

Broken upper tooth

Broken upper premolar tooth.  The root is fractured under the gum tissue.

The broken tooth is removed carefully to preserve as much bone as possible.  A OCO Biomedical 3.0mm mini dental implant is placed the same day as the extraction.  With the design of the OCO mini implant it is able to achieve high initial stability.  Enough to place a temporary crown to shape the tissue during healing.

Tissue healed

Tissue after shaping and healing with a temporary crown.  The temporary crown was removed to check healing…pink healthy gum tissue with no bleeding.  A standard crown impression will be taken and a porcelain crown will be made to fit over the mini dental implant.

With a mini dental implant there are lots of solutions that can be offered to patients.

Missing Teeth? Mini Dental Implants Can Help

Before web It is estimated that over 50% of Americans are missing at least one tooth (not including wisdom teeth or third molars).

Some of these missing teeth can be in the smile area.  This picture shows a patient of mine that lost two of her teeth due to fractures in the root.  She did not like showing the large gap between her molar and her canine tooth.

For this case I selected a OCO Biomedical two piece 3.25mm dental implant.  The picture to the right shows the OCO ERI 3.25 implant being placed.  The bone was very soft and the two piece implant was allowed to heal without fear that it would get moved around by biting forces.

OCO Biomedical ERI 3.25mm dental implant in place right below the gum.  The gold color you see is the collar of the implant.  I think it is a nice touch to mask the grey color of the implant.

The OCO Biomedical Implants with a solid abutment screwed in place.  The abutment is the part that is placed into the implant and comes up out of the gum for the crown to cement to.  This does add an additional expense but in some cases it is necessary.

Mini Dental Implants ~ Extractions ~ Lower Denture

My next patient is a great example of how versatile mini dental implants can be.

Lower ridge with 2 teeth left.  Patient has been wearing an all acrylic partial denture.  He is going to do a sequenced treatment plan where we place 4 mini dental implants and make a full lower denture.  As he is able to accumulate the funds we will add in 4 -5 more mini dental implants to support a full lower porcelain bridge.

The teeth are extracted and the mini dental implants are placed.  The only bleeding that occurred in this case is from the extraction sites; not from the mini dental implants.

This kind of placement allows patients to have less healing and less pain.

X ray showing the 2.2mm OCO mini dental implant in place in between the bone.  What looked like wide bone in the mouth has a facial and lingual curve making the bone narrower that it appears.  Perfect spot to use a mini dental implant.

From here is will be a straight forward overdenture case.  We were able to get his first impression today after the mini implants were placed.  From that a wax rim will be made with some speaking wax to record how his jaws come together.  In a few weeks his denture will be complete; the gums where the teeth were extracted will have closed in and he will have a snap in/ snap out lower full denture all thanks to the mini dental implant.
